Because our grandparents were too far away or too old (my paternal grandpa was already 80 by the time I was born) to do regular grandparent-y things with my siblings and me, our Aunt Mary Ellen and Uncle Nate ably stepped into that role. With fishing and camping trips for my brothers, and “major make-up” cosmetic raids for my sister and me, we were anything but deprived. July 5 marked their 50th anniversary, a rather stunning feat.
